Office Gossip

We've all done it and we've all been on the receiving end of it (whether or not we know it) - gossip is part of the workplace.  Search the web and the management literature - you will find tons of information on it, from cartoons, to blogs to share it, to minimizing it,  to how to eliminate it.  So, if it is a fact of work life, and everyone in management knows that it is damaging and usually untrue - why does gossip get its victims in so much trouble?  Sure, we all like being "in the know," but what about the malicious stuff, the stuff that never has any proof and/or has no place at the office? 
I have yet to encounter a manager/leader about whom there is not some seriously nasty rumors flying around the office, it comes with the territory.  So as managers who are on the receiving end of the mean stuff,  I think we have an obligation to ignore the rumors, or at the very least look into any truths.  But instead, too many of us take in the gossip  and begin to judge people differently and ignore performance because of who they are dating, how much they are worth, or simply that the office bully/gossip does not like them.  At some point, performance and reality need to take the lead. 
But never mind me! I just got too big a dose of office water cooler talk and needed my soapbox to vent for a moment.
